Ibiza: Revisited

Ibiza: Revisited

Many talk of the magic of Ibiza and indeed there is a significant pull that led me to return for a subsequent year. The pace of island time, the mysticism surrounding the region, the energy and magnetism of its location and the opportunity to have a different experience on every visit, ensures that Ibiza is a spot you could keep returning to and still feel like you didn't quite grasp all of its essence!

Our trip last year (check it out here) was definitely more explorative, rejuvenating and spiritual. We stayed along the east and north of the island and spent much time journeying to hidden beaches, hiking and unwinding in beautiful hotel destinations. This time round, we rallied a group of friends and went for a mix of witnessing the famous party side of the island, as well as revisiting some of our favourite locations.

To stay

villa rental ibiza

Despite our incredible hotel experiences last time round, this year we opted to rent out a big shared villa with our friends. We used Villa Rental Ibiza and fortunately, our stay went off without a hitch. In fact, we were incredibly lucky to have scored an upgrade as our original villa had sprung a leak in the plumbing, causing it to be unavailable. The staff on the ground in Ibiza are super helpful and within easy contact through your stay should any issues arise. My only warning would be in the slight delays of communication prior to your trip – during peak season you will want to stay on top of the booking team as they weren’t super communicative about pre-arrival and check-in!

To explore

Ibiza Boat Hire

The best way to luxuriate in the crystal clear, turquoise waters of Ibiza? To hire a boat and be atop it! With many hidden coves and hard to access beaches, dotted around the island (let alone the parking nightmares in peak season), if you’re wanting a day of sun and salt, then getting out on the water by chattering a private boat with Ibiza Boat Hire is definitely the best way to create a memorable holiday experience.

On our trip last year, we took the ferry option to the adjacent island of Formentera (a must-do FYI!) – which was…well, fine – but took up a lot of extra time and faffing around that could have been better spent relaxing and enjoying the day. This year we weren’t messing about, so dialled in the experts at Ibiza Boat Hire, who are known for their reputable service and five star commitment to making your trip a memorable experience for your party.

On your own private speedboat, you'll be able to set the agenda of the day and your experienced and knowledgable captain will help to guide you to some of the best, often hidden, spots around the island . So all you need to do is pop a bottle and relax!

Opting for a full day packaged, we set off from San Antonio upon our luxe, 7 person speedboat, The Cranchi, navigating around the west of the island, to sparkling bays accessed only by boat, past magical Es Vedra and onto the hidden cove of Atlantis, getting salty by diving off the back of the boat when moored within secluded coves.  Jetting over to Forementera for a lunch stop, check out  the review of Juan Y Andreas below, the five star service continues with chilled out beats pumping through the boats sound system and plenty of photo-ops. Back on board feeling sun-drenched, slightly sleepy and if a touch tipsy, as we cruised back towards port we were a gratefully content assortment of humans lounging across the back deck of the boat, cooling off with the salt-spray as the afternoon sun beat down upon us.

To eat

Destino, San josep

The popular, yet unassuming and somewhat undiscovered outdoor eatery is tucked into a buzzing courtyard in San Josep and is one restaurant not to be missed. Offering (likely) the best variations of tapas you will find on the island, the Destino kitchen runs a “no menu” operation – always a good sign that what is to come will be sensational. Move over regular patatas bravas and calamares, a visit here will delight your tastebuds with the very best of authentic, Spanish homecooking, with a hint of middle eastern influences thrown in. A lively and engaging head waiter will take delegates from your table inside to witness the brimming to full, display cases of dishes, walking you through the specialities of the day. Covering all palettes and dietary preferences, it's like an Ibizan Aladdin's cave of delicious sharing plates that will soon be making their way to your table to enjoy under the stars with a jug of sangria!

passioncafe.jpg

Passion Café, various locations

This health food mecca is an absolute go-to for healthy meals and takeaways. With various locations dotted across the island, you can easily locate a Passion café nearby for a hearty breakfast, smoothie, CBD latte or casual lunch which will tick all the GF/DF/RSF boxes. With quality and responsibly sourced ingredients throughout the menu, if you’re looking to keep a wellness focus while on holiday, Passion is your best bet!

The Skinny Kitchen, various locations

Another healthy food hangout, The Skinny Kitchen’s Ibiza outpost (they also have cafes abck in the UK) shares their menu suited for every health conscious holidaymaker. The all-day menu features a mix of brunch, acai bowls, delicious lunch items and fresh pressed juices which will suit the avid macro-counting muscle-builder as much as the green-loving vegan gang.

Juan Y Andrea, formentera

For an upmarket and unforgettable dining experience, you’ll want to book into this famous beachside seafood restaurant on Formentera. Every aspect of your visit to Juan Y Andrea is memorable, from the pick up from your boat to take you to shore, to feeling the sand beneath your feet, to people-watching your fellow diners and the sharing of food between your friends. It’s certainly not a cheap experience, but a meal here is a highlighted celebration of visiting the idyllic island.

To party

Blue Marlin

This infamous beach lounge bar offers a laidback ambience and more refined Ibiza party atmosphere, where you’ll relax and retox perched on the edge of dramatic Ibizan coastline. A majorly popular spot in peak season, you’re best to book sun loungers or daybeds at Blue Marlin well in advance to secure entry and once there, unwind under the Spanish sun with a glass of rose in hand. When the heat gets too much, simply dip yourself into the clear ocean at the front of the club and cool off. The staff are attentive, but not intrusive, keeping you refilled and hydrated throughout the day, all the while offering some great banter.

As the sun dips over the horizon, (perfect for those golden hour and sunset snaps) the mood shifts into a higher party frequency, rousing the crowd into the inner bar where they stay late into the evening. If you’re looking for more than just the sushi menu or beachside snacks delivered to your lounger, you can always also book into the restaurant, with a delectable seafood focused, Spanish menu on offer.

Ushuaia, Sant Jordi

If youre looking for a touch of an Ibizan club experience, but heading into the dungeons of the all-night superclubs isn't quite your vibe, then check out the headliners at Ushuaia, an open air club along the Sant Jordi strip. Set with the hotel grounds, the sweepingly expansive club hosts plenty of big names for the main Ibiza season, regularly drawing in large crowds for their sunset sessions. Pulling out all kind of cheer-rousing tricks, from the dancers, aeralists, firework and flames – a visit to Ushuaia gives you the taste of an Ibizan party experience, but can still have you home by 1pm…

To dive in

The beaches of Ibiza are the kind that sparkle like diamonds. Turquoise waters that seem unfathomably crystal clear and are the perfect temperature to dive on in to. There are many bays tucked around the island (check out some more in this post) but most of the best hug the west coast. Parking can get pretty chaotic at some of the more popular spots, so best to head in early and claim your sandy strip!

Be sure not to miss: Cala Comte, Cala Tarida, Cala D’Hort, Cala Salada, Playa de ses Illetes (on Formentera).

To awaken the spirit

Sunset at Es Vedra

As one of the most magnetic points on earth (sharing status with the Bermuda Triangle and North Pole), the majestic Es Vedra has a pull that draws in all kinds to witness its power. Beyond just a scenic outlook, perfect for a sunset walk or picnic, Es Vedra is mystically rumoured to have unlimited potentials to awaken energy and shift potential in those open to the receiving of the portal. Even if that doesn’t sound like your brand of belief, it’s indeed a beautiful site to behold, offering a beautiful view out over the calm horizon.
